About Wisconsin

Wisconsin is home to about 5.6 million Wisconsinites. The population and total land area are ranked near each other, with the population ranking 20th in the United States and land area ranking 23rd in the country. Wisconsin was the 30th state admitted to the United States on May 29, 1848. The capital is Madison and the largest and best known city in the state is Milwaukee.

One product that Wisconsin is famous for is cheese. Wisconsin comes in second only to California for the production of two other dairy products: milk and butter. The state is also a leading producer of oats, potatoes, cranberries, ginseng, carrots, cherries, and snap beans. Many food processing companies have taken up manufacturing in the state. Some of these include Oscar Mayer, Tombstone Pizza, and Johnsonville Brats. Wisconsin is also historically a major beer producing state. Miller Brewing Company used to have headquarters in the state. Kraft Cheese employs more than 5,000 people in the state.

In Kenosha, American Motors opened in a plant 1902 and continued production until 1988. Vehicles produced at this iconic plant included the Gremlin, Hornet, Concorde, Spirit, Pacer, and Eagle. Now the plant is called Harborpark development. The plant today produces Chrysler engines, which is fitting since it is Chrysler that acquired American Motors.
