About Tennessee

With a population of over 6.2 million people, Tennessee is the 17th most populated American state. Tennessee became part of the United States on June 1, 1796 and was the 16th state to join the Union. The capital of the state is Nashville and the largest city is Memphis.

Tennessee has seen some of the worst racism in the country with the formation of the Ku Klux Klan in 1866 and the assassination of Martin Luther King in 1968 in Memphis. Despite its racial problems in the past, the state was home to rock and roll and early blues music. Famous musicians such as Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Charlie Rich all started their recording careers in the state. Tennessee is also home to the Grand Ole Opry.

Tennessee is also home to two major auto plants. One is a Volkswagen plant located in Chattanooga, scheduled to begin production in 2011. At this plant, a new mid-sized sedan will be produced. Total plant output will be approximately 150,000 vehicles annually; the plant will employ 2,000 people. The other plant is a Nissan plant located in Smyrna, which opened in 1983 and produces over 550,000 vehicles annually. Vehicles produced at the Smyrna plant include the Nissan Altima, Maxima, Xterra, Frontier, and Pathfinder. Also, engines for Nissan and Infiniti are produced at a powertrain plant in Decherd.
