About New Mexico

New Mexico is the fifth largest U.S. state by land area. The state is ranked 36th in population with just over two million people in the entire state. Santa Fe, which is the capital of New Mexico, was settled around 1608, and was mainly a trade center. Albuquerque, founded in 1706, is the largest city in the state. New Mexico has a varying terrain of mountains, forests, deserts, snow covered peaks and many protected national parks, which bring in a significant number of tourists.

The are three U.S. Air Force bases, federal research labs, and a missile range in New Mexico; the economy has benefited greatly thanks to the federal government. The deserts in New Mexico provide the government with adequate proving grounds. Microelectronics, call centers, and Indian casinos have also helped with employment growth in New Mexico.

Two very common vehicles in New Mexico, along with Texas, California, and Arizona, are the Volkswagen Beetle and the Brazilian T2C Transporters. These vehicles are popular in the Southwest U.S. because residents from Mexico can legally operate these vehicle in the U.S. Many Beetles were used as taxi cabs in Mexico, but have been banned due to a law requiring four-door vehicles. The cars are legal in the U.S as long as they remain registered in Mexico.
