About New Jersey

On December 18, 1787, New Jersey became the third American state. Despite being the third smallest state in the U.S., its population count is ranked as the 11th highest with over 8.7 million people. The largest city in New Jersey is Newark and the capital is Trenton. Due to poor soil, New Jersey is primarily an industrial state. Paterson is just one city that grew and prospered in the industrial revolution.

Being located right on the Atlantic coast, New Jersey gets many tourists every year. While tourism is an important industry for the state, there are also numerous other industries that keep the economy healthy. New Jersey is also centered around the pharmaceutical, telecommunications, and chemical development industries. New Jersey is ranked in the top five in the country for production of blueberries, cranberries, spinach, bell peppers, peaches, and head lettuce.

In 1955, Ford Motor Company opened a plant in Mahwah, which was the largest assembly plant of its time. But the plant had to shut its doors in 1982. However, the local sports teams in the town of Mahwah kept the name Thunderbirds because the Ford plant was an important part of the economy. This plant also was mentioned in a song by Bruce Springsteen in the opening line of “Johnny 99.”
