Mississippi was the 20th state to enter the United States after being admitted into the U.S. on December 10, 1817. The largest city and capital of Mississippi is Jackson, which is home to just under 174,000 people. Mississippi consists entirely of lowlands and is part of the East Gulf Coastal Plain. The northern region of Mississippi has very rich soil, primarily because the Mississippi River deposits silt as it runs through the area.
The most valuable crops grown in Mississippi are cotton and soybeans. Other important sources of income are from beef and dairy cattle, catfish, chicken eggs, and young chickens. Mississippi is also one of the top states for producing shrimp. Some products made in Mississippi are appliances, generators, stereo systems, ocean-going freighters and tankers, and motor vehicles and vehicle parts.
Toyota is currently building an auto plant in Blue Springs, which will hire 2,000 employees. The plant is scheduled to open in the fall of 2011.
