Minnesota is the 12th largest state in the United States with about 5.3 million people. In 1858, Minnesota became the 32nd state to enter into the United States, known as the “Land of 10,000 Lakes.” St. Paul is the capital of Minnesota, but Minneapolis is the state’s largest city. The twin cities, comprised of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area, revolves around transportation, business and industry, and education and arts communities.
Fur trading and agriculture were Minnesota’s earliest industries. As the largest producer of sweet corn, green peas, beets, and sugar, Minnesota currently ranks sixth in the U.S. for having the most products sold around the country. Forestry, logging, and mining have also been an important part of Minnesota’s economy. Minnesota is also home to Ford’s oldest assembly plant.
Ford’s Twin Cities Assembly Plant was built in 1924, making it the oldest Ford plant still in operation. Twin Cities Assembly produces the Ford Ranger pickup truck and the Mazda B-Series. On average, it takes just 20.77 hours to roll out a completed vehicle, which is about 3.5 hours faster than any other Ford plant. But though this plant has advantages, the production of of the Ranger went down from 300,000 in 1998 to less than 120,000 in 2005. Now the Twin Cities Assembly plant risks being shut down as the Ford Ranger and Mazda B-Series face an uncertain future.
