About Michigan

Michigan is the Great Lakes state with just over 10 million residents as of the 2008 U.S. Census. In addition to being the home of the most freshwater shorelines in the United States, Michigan is also home to Metro Detroit, the historic home of the American auto industry. After first being explored by the French in the 17th century, Michigan passed to the British and then onto American leadership in the 19th century.

The birth of the American auto industry was spearheaded by Henry Ford, who built his first manufacturing plant in the Detroit enclave of Highland Park at the turn of the 20th century. In response, African Americans moved to Detroit in large numbers for the promise of increased employment opportunities and the higher pay rates offered by the auto industry. By 1910, Detroit had grown to become the fourth largest American city.

Michigan remains a powerhouse in the auto industry in the 21st century; Chrysler, Ford and General Motors all have the their global headquarters in Metro Detroit. Major assembly plants also remain in Detroit, Flint, Hamtramck, Lansing and Sterling Heights, among other cities. Smaller automotive suppliers that provide integral components to auto manufacturers around the world are also based in Michigan, with auto electrical and mechanical parts being manufactured in all corners of the state.
