Maine is a state located in New England. It is the easternmost American state and is the farthest north of all New England states. Maine is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, New Hampshire, Quebec and New Brunswick. As of 2009, Maine has a population of about 1.32 million residents spread over 35,385 square miles. Maine is ranked 38th in population density. The capital of the state is Augusta and the largest city and metro area is Portland. Maine became a state in March 1820 and was formally organized as the District of Maine prior to statehood. This designation was used from American independence until statehood.
The early economy of Maine was largely dependent on shipbuilding, with shipyards producing wooden sailing ships during the 18th and 19th centuries. In the 21st century, many Mainers work in construction, manufacturing, transportation and utilities, financial services and education.
While Maine has no auto manufacturing plants, automotive parts suppliers do call Maine home. Like auto-centered businesses in other parts of the United States, suppliers in Maine have also struggled during the economic downturn. In early 2009, ZF Lemforder, a Brewer, Maine-based supplier of driveline and chassis components received word that their supplier plant would be closed by mid-2010.
