Kansas is a state located in the Midwestern United States. It has a population of 2.82 million, according to a 2009 estimate. The state spans 82,277 square miles, making the population density only 32.9 residents per square mile. It’s s ranked 40th in the U.S. Like much of the country, Kansas was long inhabited by Native Americans, with most of the area passing into American leadership in 1803 as part of the Louisiana Purchase. Kansas was part of the Missouri Territory from 1812 to 1821 and granted statehood in January 1861.
The capital of Kansas is Topeka and its largest city is Wichita. The largest urban metropolitan area in the state is the portion of the Kansas City metropolitan area that stretches westward into the state.
General Motors assembles vehicles at the Fairfax Assembly Plant, located at 3201 Fairfax Trafficway in Kansas City, Kansas. As of 2010, the plant builds the Chevrolet Malibu and Buick LaCrosse mid-size sedans. The plant previously built some Pontiac G6 and Saturn Aura models in conjunction with a plant in Pontiac, Michigan. Interestingly enough, the Fairfax plant is built on the site of the former Fairfax airport, with the old airport runway still stretching around the property.
