Iowa is a state in the American Midwest, which has a population of approximately three million as of 2009. Iowans are spread over 56,272 square miles, which makes Iowa the 35th most densely populated state. The heritage of Iowa can be found in the Territory of Iowa, which was established by order of Congress on July 4, 1838. Iowa rose to statehood in December 1846, making it the 29th state. The capital, largest city and largest metro area in the state is Des Moines, located near the geographic center of the state in Polk and Warren counties. Iowa City, home to the University of Iowa, was once a territorial capital and later the first state capital of Iowa.
Iowa remains largely dependent on agriculture; the growth of agriculture in the state rose to prominence between 1865 and 1930. Not only did agriculture raise the financial prospects of the state, it also resulted in a population boom. The population of Iowa rose from 674,913 in 1860 to 1.194 million in 1870. The growth of railroads increased Iowa’s level of connectedness with the rest of the country and, in turn, further fueled Iowa’s agricultural prominence. The Great Depression and World War II helped lessen the state’s dependence on agriculture, and Iowans now produce farm and office equipment, among other items, thanks to economic diversification.
Iowa has been the birthplace of U.S. President Herbert Hoover. Iowa is home to five Nobel Prize winners Norman Borlaug, recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize; Thomas Cech, recipient of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry; Alan J. Heeger, also a recipient of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry; John Mott, recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize; and Stanley B. Prusiner, recipient of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
